Moses CHADWELL

(1637-1684) - Lynn, Essex co., MA

(Third Generation - Chadwell Family)

FATHER
MOTHER
Thomas CHADWELL
Margaret [surname not known]

BIRTH Moses was born on 10 April 1637 in Lynn, Essex co., MA[1,14].
DEATH He died at sea on 25 April 1684; he was 47[1,14].
RESIDENCES Moses lived in Lynn, Essex co., MA all his life.
OCCUPATION Moses was a Shipwright.
MARRIAGE In 12m(February): 1660/1 when Moses was 22, he married Sarah IVORY, daughter of William IVORY & Ann SOUTH in Lynn, Essex co., MA [1,15,16,17,18,19,20,21].

CHILDREN 7. i. Thomas CHADWELL Thomas was born on 11d:10m(December):1662 in Lynn, Essex co., MA[2,18,32] and died in Lynn, Essex co., MA on 16 January 1740; he was 77[2]. Thomas was a husbandman & fisherman[2]. On 7 Jan 1740/1, Thomas gave his grandson Moses Newhall real estate in Lynn. Moses' brother Jacob Newhall, Jr. witnessed the deed[33]. He was active in Lynn town affairs[2].

Circa 1686 when Thomas was 23, he first married Hannah SMITH, daughter of Richard SMITH & Hannah CHENEY, in Lynn, Essex co., MA[2].
They had one child:
i. Hannah

Thomas second married Sarah NEWHALL, widow of Thomas BREED, daughter of John NEWHALL Jr. & Elizabeth NORMANTON. Sarah was born on 22 August 1662[34,35] and was buried on 27 November 1688[36]. She is Waters #68.

8. ii. Ruth CHADWELL Please see her own page.
9. iii. Sarah CHADWELL Sarah was born on 12 March 1667/8 in Lynn, Essex co., MA[2,32].
10. iv. [possibly Lois?] CHADWELL She was born on 3 October 1670[2] and died on 28 February 1737; she was 66[44]. All of Moses & Sarah's children's births were meticulously recorded in the Lynn vital records, but her birth record is not anywhere in the Essex county records. There is no listed marriage record of a male Chadwell to a woman named Lois. The only mention of her is in Marcia Wiswall's article in The Essex Genealogist[2]. Wiswall states her birth & death records and is listed by her as being unmarried. Yet, the death record in Lynn reads "Chadwell, Lois, Mrs. Feb. 28, 1737-8, a. 65 y." I don't think she is a child of Moses and Sarah. I need more conclusive proof that she is.
11. v. Moses CHADWELL Moses was born on 11 September 1673 in Lynn, Essex co., MA[37] and died in Lynn, Essex co., MA on 29 September 1676; he was 3[45].
12. vi. Margaret CHADWELL Margaret was born on 30 September 1676 and died in Lynn, Essex co., MA on 29 November 1693; she was 17[45].
13. vii. Anna CHADWELL Anna was born on 17 June 1679 in Lynn, Essex co., MA[46]. On 27 November 1697 when Anna was 18, she married Jonathon RAMSDELL, in Lynn, Essex co., MA[47].
14. viii. Elizabeth CHADWELL Elizabeth was born on 18 December 1681 in Lynn, Essex co., MA[46]. On 31 October 1710 when Elizabeth was 28, she first married John RAMSDELL, in Lynn, Essex co., MA[2,47]. On 16 May 1728 when Elizabeth was 46, she second married Joseph BATES[2].
